Permits
There is no statewide tree permit.
New Jersey required every municipality covered by its stormwater permit to adopt its own tree removal and replacement ordinance by May 2024. The rules differ town by town, and towns amend them by council vote.
Many towns require a permit or replacement planting before a tree comes down. Call your town office first, then hire a business registered with the Board.
Seven municipalities are outside that permit.
Registration
What an NJTC number means
- The state requires a registered business to carry $1,000,000 in liability insurance.
- It requires workers' compensation cover.
- It requires a licensed tree expert or licensed tree care operator on staff.
Registration is as the state recorded it on 2 Oct 2026. See what a registration proves, then confirm it with the NJ Board of Tree Experts before you hire.
