How we check
How public records become the list you see.
Five checks, in order
State directory read
We read the NJ Board of Tree Experts public directory. On 2 Oct 2026 it listed 859 active registrations, and 858 of them name at least one license holder. A business that lapses is removed at the next check. We show license holders as the state records them.
Addresses placed
Street addresses are placed with the US Census geocoder. Where there is no street address we use the coordinates the state itself records. Where there is neither, we measure from the town center.
Matched to a municipality
Each location is matched to one of New Jersey's 564 municipalities by its boundary. A business registered in one town and located in another is shown with both.
Ordered by distance
For each town we measure straight-line miles from the town center to the nearest location of each business. Nothing else changes the order.
Ordinances located
We searched each town's published code on 2 Oct 2026 and link to the chapter where we found one. We found a chapter for 502 of 564 towns. Rules change, so always confirm with your town.
Registered businesses and license holders
The Board says any business that provides tree care services for hire in New Jersey must be registered with it and have at least one full-time Licensed Tree Expert or Licensed Tree Care Operator on staff, depending on the services offered. Read more at the NJ Board of Tree Experts.
